Unexpected source of plastic clogging of oceans found

According to scientists who investigated this issue, huge sections of garbage floating in the middle of the oceans are less associated with people dumping plastic objects on waterways or on land than with crew members of merchant ships throwing their waste in tons.

So, as evidence of their theory, scientists cite the fact that many plastic bottles had tightly screwed caps – this is what is customary to do on board Chinese merchant ships.

“It seems that a certain sector of the merchant fleet is engaged in the discharge of waste. To a significant extent, this sector consists of Asian ships”, – said one of the authors of the study.
