The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has granted Samsung a patent for “Flexible display electronic device”.
The document describes a smartphone in the form factor “book”. When folded, sections of the flexible screen will be located in the front and back of the device. Having opened the device, the user will be able to transform it into a small tablet.
A feature of the novelty is the articulation that is complex in terms of design. It will allow folding the device not only exactly in the middle, but also so that one part of the body will not completely cover the other (see illustrations). In the second case, the owner of the gadget will have access to additional controls.
Judging by the patent illustrations, the smartphone will receive a “home” button under the screen, a front camera, a USB port and a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack.
The patent application was filed in May last year, but it was issued only on October 1, 2019. However, it is not yet clear whether the South Korean giant is going to release a commercial smartphone with the proposed design.
