How To Speed Up The Hard Drive

Hard disk. a device that has a low, but sufficient for everyday needs speed. However, due to certain factors, it can be much smaller, as a result of which the launch of programs slows down, reading and writing files, and in general it becomes uncomfortable to work. By performing a series of actions to increase the speed of the hard drive, you can achieve a significant increase in productivity in the operation of the operating system. Let’s see how to speed up the hard drive in Windows 10 or other versions of this operating system.

Increase HDD Speed

The speed of a hard disk is affected by several factors, starting from how full it is, and ending with the BIOS settings. Some hard drives, in principle, have a low speed, which depends on the spindle speed (revolutions per minute). In older or cheaper PCs, a HDD with a speed of 5600 rpm is usually installed, and in more modern and expensive PCs, 7200 rpm.

Objectively, these are very weak indicators compared to other components and capabilities of operating systems. HDD is a very old format, and solid-state drives (SSDs) are slowly replacing it. Earlier we did their comparison and told how many SSDs serve:

When one or more parameters affect the operation of the hard drive, it starts to work even slower, which becomes noticeable to the user. To increase the speed, both the simplest methods related to the systematization of files can be used, as well as changing the disk operation mode by choosing a different interface.

Method 1: Clean up the hard drive from unnecessary files and garbage

Such a seemingly simple action can speed up the disk. The reason why it is important to monitor the cleanliness of the HDD is very simple. overcrowding indirectly affects its speed.

There can be much more garbage on your computer than you think: old Windows recovery points, temporary data from browsers, programs and the operating system itself, unnecessary installers, copies (duplicate files), etc.

If you do not want to install additional software, you can use the built-in Windows tool called Disk Cleanup. Of course, this is not so effective, but it can also be useful. In this case, you will need to independently clear the temporary browser files, which are also very many.

You can also create an additional drive where you can transfer files that you don’t really need. Thus, the main disk will be more unloaded and will start to work faster.

Method 2: Use File Defragmenter wisely

One of the favorite tips regarding speeding up the disk (and the whole computer) is file defragmentation. This is really true for the HDD, so it makes sense to use it.

What is defragmentation? We have already given a detailed answer to this question in the framework of another article.

It is very important not to abuse this process, because it will give only a negative effect. Once every 1-2 months (depending on user activity) is enough to maintain the optimal state of the files.

Method 3: Cleanup Startup

This method is not directly, but affects the speed of the hard drive. If you think that the PC boots slowly when it is turned on, the programs start up for a long time, and the disk’s slow operation is to blame, then this is not entirely true. Due to the fact that the system is forced to run necessary and unnecessary programs, and the hard disk has a limited speed for processing Windows instructions, and there is a problem of speed reduction.

Method 4: Change Device Settings

Slow disk operation may also depend on its operating parameters. To change them, you must use "Device Manager".

    In Windows 7, click "Start" and start typing "Device Manager".

In Windows 8/10, click on "Start" right click and select "Device Manager".

Find the branch in the list "Disk Devices" and expand it.

Find your drive, right-click on it and select "Properties".

Switch to tab "Policy" and select the option “Optimal performance”.

  • If there is no such item, and instead the parameter “Allow record caching for this device”, then make sure it is turned on.
  • Some drives may also not have any of these options. Usually instead there is a function Optimize for Execution. Activate it and enable two additional options "Allow write caching to disk" and Enable Enhanced Performance.
  • Method 5: Correction of errors and bad sectors

    The state of the hard disk depends on its speed. If it has any file system errors, bad sectors, then processing even simple tasks can be slower. There are two options to fix existing problems: use special software from various manufacturers or check the disks built into Windows.

    Method 6: Change Hard Drive Connection Mode

    Even not very modern motherboards support two standards: the IDE mode, which is mainly suitable for the old system, and the AHCI mode, which is newer and optimized for modern use.

    Attention! This method is intended for advanced users. Be prepared for possible problems with loading the OS and other unforeseen consequences. Despite the fact that the chance of their occurrence is extremely small and tends to zero, it is still present.

    While many users have the opportunity to change IDE to AHCI, they often do not even know about it and put up with the low speed of the hard drive. Meanwhile, this is a fairly effective way to speed up the HDD.

    First you need to check what mode you have, and you can do this through "Device Manager".

      In Windows 7, click "Start" and start typing "Device Manager".

    In Windows 8/10, click on "Start" right click and select "Device Manager".

    Find a branch “IDE ATA / ATAPI Controllers” and expand it.

    Look at the name of the mapped drives. You can often find the names: “Standard Serial ATA AHCI Controller” or “Standard PCI IDE Controller”. But there are other names. it all depends on the configuration of the user. If the name contains the words “Serial ATA”, “SATA”, “AHCI”, then it means that the connection using the SATA protocol is used, with the IDE everything is the same.     If it cannot be determined, the connection type can be viewed in BIOS / UEFI. It is simple to determine: what setting will be registered in the BIOS menu is installed at the moment (screenshots with the search for this setting are slightly lower).

    When IDE mode is connected, you should start switching to AHCI from the registry editor.

    How To Speed Up The Hard Drive
    1. Press a key combination Winr, write regedit and press "OK".
    2. Go to the section

    in the right part of the window, select the option "Start" and change its current value to "0".

    After that go to the section

    and set the value "0" for parameter "0".

    Go to the section

    and for the parameter "Start" set value "0".

    Next go to the section

    select option "0" and set a value for it "0".

    Now you can close the registry and restart the computer. The first time it is recommended to run the OS in safe mode.

    After starting the computer boot, go to the BIOS (key Del, F2, Esc, F1, F10 or others, depending on the configuration of your PC).

    Path for the old BIOS:

    Integrated peripherals > SATA Configuration > AHCI

    Path for the new BIOS:

    Main > Storage configuration > Configure SATA As > AHCI

    Other location options for this option:
    Main > Sata mode > AHCI Mode
    Integrated peripherals > OnChip SATA Type > AHCI
    Integrated peripherals > SATA Raid / AHCI Mode > AHCI
    UEFI: individually depending on the version of the motherboard.
